Chinese New Year – YEAR OF THE RAT

Most of our products and suppliers are UK based or at least located within Europe. Some disruption may occur to orders for items manufactured in China and the far east placed before or after the chinese new year holiday which runs from the 18th January to the 8th of Februay 2020.

What is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is a highly important holiday in China. Traditionally, Chinese New Year starts on the last day of the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th day of the first month – The Lantern Festival.

Unlike New Year in the western world, which is celebrated on January 1st every year. The date of Chinese New Year changes yearly as it follows the ancient farmer calendar, which is based around the phases of the moon.

In the UK we are all familiar with the 12 signs of the Zodiac and the characteristics of each. Similarly, the Chinese Zodiac consists of 12 signs, each taking on the characteristics and embodiment of an animal. The signs are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Which animal is in power this year?
